Sometimes you happen upon photographs and sometimes they happen upon you. I was leaving my studio yesterday on Elm Street in Greensboro to walk up town to shoot a quick job when I heard from behind me, "Mister, take our picture." I swung around and caught this couple enjoying the mild sunny weather.

Doorknobs and Broomsticks

I live in a hundred year old farmhouse and a lot of the hardware is also that age. The other day I needed a glass doorknob to replace a broken one, so I headed across the street from my photography studio in Greensboro to Mary's Antiques. Mary's is an institution in the antique district in Old Greensboro and I have known her for years. We have bought pieces for our home and rented props for photo shoots. She carries a wonderful variety of fine antique furniture and an eclectic collection of collectibles. You never know what she might have in stock. She is also known for having perhaps the best selection of architectural antiques in the area, so if you need a door, or a knob or a hinge, her shop is the place to go. Mary's is located at 607 South Elm Street, and can be reached at 336-378-8877 or at Marys_Antiques@ATT.net. If you are in downtown Greensboro, stop by her shop and browse. It's worth the trip.

Old Greensboro

My studio is located on South Elm Street in an area called Old Greensboro. We are in the midst of downtown redevelopment which started up Elm in the middle of downtown and has moved our way. Downtown Greensboro has changed tremendously in the last few years. Fifteen years ago if you walked downtown on a Saturday, it resembled a ghost town. Now there are shops, restaurants, clubs and local residents. It's become much more vibrant and safe. Our end of the street is the older section and still maintains some of the texture. It is an area of antique shops and art galleries and a soon to open Mellow Mushroom. An old feed mill is being converted into studios. Condos are sprouting up everywhere. Yesterday as I walked to lunch, I snapped a few images of those textures. As we redevelop, I hope we do so without destroying some of these details.
