Some days are better than others. Today mine pretty well stunk for a while. It was cold and rainy and a tree had taken down part of our fence. Of course, the cows were out in my neighbor's hay field. Things had to wait till I did a few errands at work, but I did get back home, I got the cows back in and found the downed fence. As I was finishing mending and complaining to myself, I turned from where I was working and saw this log. Pretty cool.

This weekend was pleasantly warm and a walk outside was in order. It's the end of January though, so things are still pretty brown as seen in this still life of gum tree balls and leaves.

Pears on the Picnic Table

It's late summer and we start picking up fruit that falls from our trees, and it ends up lining our picnic table in the back yard. In addition to providing us with food, some of them provide sustenance for the wasps and hornets that share our farm.

Natural Patterns

Patterns abound in nature as seen in a couple of still life photographs. Above, the wind creates waves in the sand on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, while below, bacteria produces river-like patterns in a pool near a geyser in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Sweet Gum Tree

Farther down in our pasture on our farm in Randolph County is a large sweet gum tree. It's a spot I find myself returning to from time to time and year to year to make photographs. Not as colorful as maples in the fall, I somehow find the gum tree more interesting; the shape of a leaf on a lichen covered rock, and of course those prickly gum balls that are still green this time of year. Glad they're in the pasture and not in my yard.
