A black swallowtail caterpillar, one of about twenty-five or so on the parsley in our garden today. Looks like we were spared the hurricane and we'll have a new crop of butterflies.
I've heard a lot of news reports about cicadas in North Carolina recently, but I haven't seen or heard any of these 13 year "locusts" near my home. A trip to Denton on Sunday changed that. It was surreal as the woods around Denton Farm Park sounded alive with their drone. Thought for a moment I was in the Twilight Zone.
It's late summer and we start picking up fruit that falls from our trees, and it ends up lining our picnic table in the back yard. In addition to providing us with food, some of them provide sustenance for the wasps and hornets that share our farm.
