Scuppernongs

(Photograph copyright 2012 by Dan Routh)

One of the great pleasures of growing up in the rural South during the early Fall is the scuppernong, or as we used to call them, "scupanines". Wonderful as juice, wine or just for eating, these golden sweet baubles are members of the muscadine family. I picked a fresh bowl full from my Dad's vines on our farm in Grays Chapel, North Carolina.
