Badin Lake

(Photograph copyright 2011 by Dan Routh)

A canoe moves across the water of Badin Lake at sunset in the Uwharrie Mountains of central North Carolina. Formed about 500 million years ago, the Uwharries are one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America. Once rising to almost 20,000 feet, the eons have eroded them down to about 1100 feet at their highest point.
