Shiloh Church

Shiloh Church (Methodist), built around 1883 in a grove of oaks near Troy in Montgomery County, North Carolina. The pews date back to an earlier 1836 log church. There are two doors in the front, one for men to enter and the other for the women. The building also served double duty as a school.

Fox Hunting Photography

I spent Thanksgiving morning this year with the Sedgefield Hunt Club on a farm in Rockingham County, just north of Greensboro, North Carolina. It was a splendid day with some gorgeous horses, a pack of energetic and handsome hounds, and a lovely young lady who like me was at her first fox hunt, except unlike me, she was riding.

Cotton in Carolina

An afternoon lately found Dennis Burleson and his nephew Andrew picking cotton near Tuckertown Lake in Stanley County, North Carolina. Dennis farms a couple of thousand acres of cotton and his family runs a local gin that processes several thousand more.

A canoe moves across the water of Badin Lake at sunset in the Uwharrie Mountains of central North Carolina. Formed about 500 million years ago, the Uwharries are one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America. Once rising to almost 20,000 feet, the eons have eroded them down to about 1100 feet at their highest point.
